The Real Dobbs James Dobbs

There is a character that I created first in Sims 3 and then later in Sims 4. His name is Dobbs James Dobbs.

The name of the character is a play on the cliché that began with this snippet of dialog from 1962 movie “Dr. No”:

Bond: I admire your courage, Miss…?
Sylvia Trench: Trench. Sylvia Trench. I admire your luck, Mr..?
Bond: Bond. James Bond

I based the facial appearance of Dobbs James Dobbs on the real James Dobbs, my grandfather, James Monroe Dobbs, Jr. However, I based it on what I imagined that he looked like, having never seen a picture of him as an adult.

My grandfather was a not detective or anything like that. However, his father was a bit of an “international man of mystery”, having worked for more than 30 years in the U.S. Foreign Service. The elder James spent many years in South America. Twenty years before he joined the Foreign Services, my great-grandfather worked as a security agent for the Panama Railroad. This was 40 years before the opening of the Panama Canal.

His son, my grandfather, was a political operative for the Democratic Party in Texas in the 1930s and 1940s. After my grandparents were divorced, he lived with his 2nd wife and his mother in Dallas, San Antonio, and the Waco area.

So, the character is a sort of composite of James M. Dobbs, Sr. and Jr.

I never met my maternal grandfather. He died the year after I was born. He and my mother were estranged, her parents having divorced when my mother was nine years old. When I was a kid there was a framed photograph of my grandfather hanging in my bedroom; however, the picture was taken when he was 15-years old. In the photo, he was nicely dressed in a suit and tie with a Windsor knot.

I believed that picture was hung in my bedroom as a reminder that I should dress nice and be well behaved. I do not think that it worked because I was a long-haired, anti-war radical when I was 15-years old.

Up until a few days ago, I did not know what my grandfather looked like as an adult. Then last weekend, a 2nd cousin whom I have never met sent me scans of three photographs and one of the photos was of my grandfather taken around the time that my grandparents were married in 1926.
